Philharmonic Orchestra: A Melody Fantasy Came True

19 August 2018

On 19 August, “Melody Fantasy” took place at the Victoria Concert Hall, featuring the ACS (International) Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra played music from various different genres, encompassing classical, romantic, and especially modern film music. The concert opened with the exuberating and uplifting tune to Brahms’s Academic Overture, before separate sections of the orchestra showed their talents by playing individual pieces. In addition, the ACS (International) Contemporary Singers group guest performed a rendition of the melody of “Les Misérables”.

It was incredibly heartening and encouraging to see the orchestra flourish even after most of the Year 6s have stepped down to focus on their academics. Prior to Term 3, the membership of the orchestra was at stake as the Year 6s form a large part of the orchestra. However, I was delighted to see that the younger junior students have risen to take our places, even though they may not be the most advanced player or the most experienced in playing for public audiences.

It was just as emboldening to see the evolvement of the Acapella CCA into the Contemporary Singers group, as the music scene in our school has been lacking a platform for group singers to perform and be recognised as a CCA. The high quality of music performed has given me confidence that the standard of music ability in our school will continue to rise in the coming years.

It was definitely a evening filled with a plethora of melodies that allowed us (as audience) to be transported to a fantasy world of another kind. On the behalf of the orchestra, I would like to extend my gratitude to our conductor, Mr Lim Soon Lee, Ms Samantha Chong and other music teachers for maintaining and increasing the standard of our orchestra. Thanks also to the teachers-in-charge Ms Carol Ling, Mdm Josephine Toe, Ms Grace Lim, Mr Chang Weng Moon and Mr Lim Tse Ren for supporting the orchestra endlessly and for helping make this evening of fantasy a reality.
