ACS International Jeju

Introducing ACS International Jeju

Life at ACS International Jeju

Situated on the beautiful resort island of Jeju, South Korea, ACS International Jeju will be the fifth of five international schools forming the Global International City of Education located in the Seowipo-si area.

ACS International Jeju plans to open in September / October 2020 with students from Grades K–9, growing year by year to reach a capacity of 1,160 students. It is estimated that students seeking admission may apply from September 2019.

ACS International Jeju is a selective school with prospective students sitting tests in English, Mathematics, non-verbal reasoning and an oral interview. Younger Pre-school and Primary children will be assessed by observation in classes or groups.

With over 132 years of experience, the Anglo-Chinese Schools (ACS) in Asia have a well-established history of excellence in education. ACS International Jeju will join the family of six ACS Schools in Singapore and one in Jakarta.

ACS International Jeju therefore has a strong heritage to draw from and will develop its own style to complement the ACS family of schools. There will be a contingent of teachers from ACS Singapore schools and other staff will be recruited from all corners of the world, to give the school its global perspective.

Our international curriculum has a very strong academic focus, complemented by a strong pastoral care philosophy centred around a House system, and has been tailored to our location in Asia. It suits those students who want to have university options in the UK and the US as well as in Asia.

High academic standards are the bedrock for the school and it is our intention to add measurable value to the academic level of all students. The school ethos and carefully selected teachers, as well as the curriculum style, will help the students develop into very capable, independent and life-long learners.

Like all ACS schools, ACS International Jeju is a Christian school which welcomes people from all faiths and ethnic backgrounds. The school’s Christian values are universal and traditional, and underpin the education of our students as they grow into ethical, dynamic and globally-minded citizens.

Our team is innovative and forward thinking, continually reflecting on our own practice, embracing new ideas and viewpoints, to adapt to new methods of teaching and tools for learning, keeping all our schools at the forefront of educational best practice. Our specialism is technology in its widest sense, with the goal to imbed technology in how we learn and teach.

ACS International Jeju seeks to provide students with an extensive range of opportunities to challenge and fulfil their potential.

The strong academic focus ensures students know why they are at school for – to achieve a well-rounded education and development of potential in intellectual, cultural, leadership, service and sporting areas. Each of these areas supports and feeds into the others in a circuitous fashion. The student is at the heart and centre of all actions, supported by capable and enthusiastic teachers.

A strong pastoral care network supports and underpins the school’s holistic framework. At the Secondary School, compulsory boarding ensures that all students are well supported in an English-speaking environment. Each House consists of a Head of House, Housemasters and GAP students who work together to provide 24/7 support to the students who will live in two-bed units. Each Housemaster is responsible for 12 to 14 students.

Across the school, all students will be supported by a class tutor or homeroom teacher, a school counsellor, a Methodist Pastor, a Higher Education Counsellor, school nurses and a student-centred Senior Leadership Team.

The co-curricular life of an ACS school is much valued by staff and students alike. A wide range of co-curricular activities (CCAs) is envisaged to run after school during the week and on Saturdays; an extensive leadership programme which includes formal leadership positions is planned; and service and community project activities will be undertaken both locally and overseas.

Life skills such as public speaking, presentation skills, time management and the art of study are emphasised as important components in our programme to nurture future leaders and global citizens.

Everyone in the school is regarded as family. The concept of family is important to all cultures, and as a diverse and inclusive school, the school’s integrated pastoral care/House system and its emphasis on Christian values supports, encourages, and challenges all students to achieve their potential in every aspect of school life.

Life on Jeju Island

English-Speaking Community

The school is in an English-speaking zone, one of five international schools in the Global Education Village of Seoguipo-si, 30 minutes’ drive from the northern gateway city of Jeju City. Predominantly English-speaking staff from all parts of the world teach in all the five international schools. These include Branksome Hall (Canadian girls school); North London Collegiate School (England); St Johnsbury Academy (USA); Korean International School (KIS), and ACS International Jeju – a Singapore brand of ACS schools.

Food Variety

Local Korean food tends to be very meat- or fish-based but vegetarian pasta and pancakes are available. Sourcing food is no problem, with an abundance of meat and fresh vegetables available on this fertile island. The City Hall area of Jeju City has considerable variety and is well priced. The school canteen will have western as well as Asian food options.

Pastimes

Jeju offers an outdoor lifestyle. There are walking and mountain bike trails along coastal pathways. Dormant volcanoes are aplenty, with the famous Mt Halle being the highest. Roads and highways are in good condition though the cars compete with farm vehicles on occasion. Beaches for swimming and paddling see crowds in the weekends. Many cafes are available for catch-ups and shopping in a modern shopping environment is just 20 minutes away. There are distinct seasons, with some snow, and wind. The cold season is purportedly shorter than that on the mainland.

If you are interested in building community and being part of an ACS heritage that will have its own characteristics in ACS International Jeju, express your interest by contacting acsjejurecruiting@acsinternational.edu.sg. Formal recruitment will begin in April/May 2019.

Salary

Salaries are tax-free; with two-thirds paid in US dollars and one-third paid in Korean Won. The salary packages are highly competitive with other schools on Jeju Island and international schools in Asia. In addition, all expatriate staff can expect the following benefits:

  • One month annual bonus (accumulative), payable on exit
  • Accommodation allowance
  • Annual return flight home for staff and their dependent family
  • Medical insurance for staff and their dependent family
  • 100% paid tuition fees for up to three dependent children at ACS International Jeju
  • Up to USD$5,000 one-year interest-free car loan
  • School laptop
  • A three-year initial contract

Jobs for Partners

For staff with partners who are teachers too, we will do our best to find work in ACS International Jeju on a local package. However, if there are no vacancies, there are four other schools in the same Education City within walking distance of each other, and there may be vacancies there. If the partner has a university degree and an EAL qualification, they could possibly find work as an EAL teacher at various language academies.

Healthcare

International healthcare in a private medical scheme covering hospital inpatient care and repatriation will be provided for all staff and their families. The island’s outpatient care is reputed to be excellent with one or more English-speaking doctors or surgeons in each clinic, though inpatient care is reputedly more like the rest of Asia where families are expected to support the patient more than expatriates are used to.

Korean Language and Cultural Lessons

Outside of the immediate area of service facilities and restaurants that have popped up adjacent to the schools, there is little English spoken until you visit Jeju City or the local resorts. Learning some Korean fairly quickly will be important and we intend to make available Korean lessons for staff. Staff children will have the option of joining the Korean language and culture classes that are compulsory for Korean children.
